The Fall of Madonna's Marriage

By Kasey Morton

I'm sure you've heard that Madonna and Guy Ritchie are calling it quits on their marriage. This newsworthy fact has been made abundantly clear to us by multiple magazine publications. These tabloids are shouting it out on every magazine stand at every grocery store in the world.

The original statement announcing their divorce was unintentionally amusing. Madonna's spokespeople asked the media to respect her privacy. Yeah, right. It's like throwing a juicy piece of meat into a kennel of dogs and asking them to ignore it. Celebrities of Madonna's caliber don't get to shut out the media when they're going through a rough patch.

It's sad to admit, though, that we actually like watching these high profile splits. We like watching drama ensue. We like watching high people fall from grace. We enjoy witnessing celebrities' hard and difficult moments.

I think that we also enjoy seeing what was once a mystery, finally revealed. We've sat in wonder at the marriage of these two famous people. We wonder how anyone with that kind of fame and fortune could really have a healthy home life as well. So the mystery is revealed, in big and flashy truth--they were not happy!

On one hand, we envy and want to emulate famous and rich people. We envy their status and their luxurious lives. We envy just about everything we imagine them to have. They seem successful, and we covet it.

But we also want their lives to fall apart. We want this partly out of jealousy, but mostly to validate our own existence, our own self-worth. We see Madonna's sad life and we say, "She may be rich and famous, but she doesn't have what I have."

All of that larger-than-life glamour is revealed as what we've always suspected--her life is unrealistic. Madonna likes to pretend that it's possible to be a super successful sex symbol, with an exotic artist's life, full of wealth and privilege. But we know the truth. Even her so-called spiritual side is thrown in question when we see all of the spiteful behavior that they're exhibiting.

But then we see it all come crashing down, and we realize that all the glitz and glamour doesn't mean anything. And for some reason, it's fun to watch this reality check. - 16035
