Residential Roof Repair - What Good Contractors offer

By Craig K. Albrecht

Whether it was a choice to re-shingle and update your home or a hail-based mandate from above, you want to hire a good contractor. It really should go without saying, but all too often homeowners will hire the first Tom, Dick, or Harry to show up on their doorstep. Unfortunately, this leads to unhappy circumstances and poor workmanship. Instead of hiring without knowing, ask questions in these four areas to determine if this is the contractor for you:

Customer Service - We demand it at banks and government centers, so why wouldn't you expect it of a contractor? If a contractor does not call you back within an allotted time frame or treats you in a disrespectful manner then they need to go. They will treat you the same way they treat your house.

Free Estimates - You shouldn't have to pay for something that will give a contractor business. If he wants the job he will come to you, do the measurements, ask the questions and give you a free and competitive estimate. It's okay to get several estimates from different companies to select the best contractor for you.

Landscaping - Your hydrangeas and lilies should look like hydrangeas and lilies when the job is done, not hacked up shreds of green. When the contractor measures for the quote, watch how he works around your landscaping. If he is less then docile, he may not be the right contractor for you.

Insurance - A good contractor should not only be willing to give paperwork to insurance adjusters, but they should be willing to do a walk around with them. A contractor can make sure the adjuster isn't missing anything. A roofer not willing to take the time to work with your adjuster is not worth having.

For a good roof repair experience, do your research before you hire. Deal with local companies that you know will be there in the future if you have any problems or follow-up needs. Local companies know that their business next year comes from doing well by their customers this year. They know that you are the reason they are in business and you need to come first. - 16035
