Home Built Wind Generator - Do You Want To Make Your Own Power

By Adrian Fletcher

It may sound outlandish to dictch your utility company but some people are realy considering this as an option. There primary reason is to save money but there are many other reasons too.

Electricity bills go up and the rate at which they inflate seems to be breaking all previous records. Whether there are genuine supply and demand reasons for this increase or other factors like greed or politics behind it all, the truth remains that people are warming to alternatives. One such alternative is a home built wind generator

Why a Home Built Wind Generator ?

Simply put, why not ? Here are some of the advantages

Once you have installed a wind generator there is little to no running costs and all the electricity it creates is free. It is important to point out that you need an adequate amount of wind to make such a project viable and you will need some spare plot of land where the generator or turbine can be erected. If you live in a remote area then erecting a wind generator is not a problem but if you live in a residential area you may want to notify your neighbors of your plans too.

Kits Vs Home Grown

The increased awareness of alternative energy has spawned many products in the home built wind generator field. Some are good and some not so, but basically you have two options - buy a kit or you can buy plans and build the generator from scratch. The kit is easy to install and is aimed at people without much DIY knowledge or expertise. A DIY solution require a bit or experience but gives you more flexibility in design and implementation.

Anyone with simple DIY skills will be able to erect a home built wind turbine from a kit. It's not only good for your utility bills but an interesting project to take on. Prices will differ based on the size of the turbine.

If you have the skills and want to build a wind generator from scratch then you'll find a book or website that can show you how to build one (Some websites and products even come as videos if you prefer learning that way). The materials for your generator can be purchased second hand on places like ebay if you are on a budget.

It boils down to your mechanical and electrical abilities in the end (and maybe a little canniness in locating parts). But the end result should be a home built wind generator that produces electricity.

For most people, a home built wind generator will be a useful addition to your existing energy sources, like the grid. It is unlikely it will completely power your home. More likely it will provide the power for a few appliances. Even so this will reduce your electricity bills and is just a start to your alternative energy power sources adventure.

And along with the money saving, you are doing your bit for the environment too. Everyone has a part to play and some responsibility in helping reduce carbon emissions. - 16035
