International Marketing for Your Business Via the Internet

By Rick Jenkinns

Any business can be marketed online. Even your average mom and pop store on the corner can be marketed on the internet. There are several advantages to marketing a business online. These advantages include, but are not limited to, the affordability of having an online presence, almost any budget can include online marketing; the worldwide reach of the internet allows you to reach your target audience anywhere; and the ability to tailor your marketing message to appeal to many different sectors of your target audience.

One of the main reasons businesses are looking to the internet for their marketing needs is the affordability factor. The internet is constantly evolving in a direction that makes it more feasible to reach larger numbers of people for less. While there are costs incurred through website hosting and internet access, these fees are minor when you consider how many people can be reached. Websites can be marketed for low costs, or even for free in many cases, via participating in forums related to your type of business, posting links to your website on other websites, or exchanging links with other businesses and organizations.

The ability to reach prospective customers anywhere is another great advantage of marketing your business online. Traditional target market research is not only time consuming but also can be costly and then your marketing methods are only reaching a limited audience through print media, radio and local TV campaigns. Now with the internet, you can drastically increase that reach across the globe, targeting your market niche in other countries that might not otherwise ever hear about you and your business.

The realization that you can reach customers around the world is mind boggling and you must see the major advantage to marketing your business online now. Regardless of where you live and operate, your business has the ability to reach those who have an interest in the products you sell or the services you provide no matter what their proximity to you is. This makes it possible for you to do business with customers anywhere in the world.

One of the best advantages of online marketing is that it is always available to anyone with internet access. Many working people have a difficult time shopping, especially for unusual items that are not easily found locally, simply due to time constraints. Working 9 to 5 and then going home to take care of home and family leaves little time for the average person to find that needed item or that perfect unique gift. The internet allows people to shop 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The internet is always open. Comparison shopping before the internet, was time consuming to say the least. You would have to travel from store to store to compare prices or make numerous phone calls but then not be able to see the product in person. Now, with online marketing a shopper sit in the comfort of their own home and can compare right on their screen the different products available. They can compare prices and shipping options too and then place their order right online. It doesn?t get much easier than that for the consumer or for the business owner.

If your business is not yet being represented online, what are you waiting for? You need to be learning more about the world of Internet marketing. Your business needs you to be learning how to market it online. This is so important because if your competitors are marketing on the internet, you may find they are gaining a steady advantage over you and are becoming more appealing to the online customer. Don't let your competition get a lead on you, get out there and get online today. - 16035

Product Review: Sanyo HEC DR6700K Massage Chair Recliner

By Steve Esquire

There are many massage chairs on the market today and you have more choices on the types of features and functions. We will provide a product review of the Sanyo DR 6700K massage chair. This is a higher end massage chair from Sanyo. Our product review will cover the more important features of the massage recliner. We will also touch on the warranty included with the Sanyo DR 6700 massage recliner.

Warranty is the first thing we want to cover and get out of the way. We are amazed at the pace in which features and functions are being added to massage chair. On the flip side of this we also advise our customers to make sure they get sufficient warranty coverage for their long term protection.

So what is the warranty coverage for the Sanyo HEC-DR6700 massage chair? Sanyo makes it easy, since they offer the same warranty on all chairs. That is good for their low end chairs but less sufficient for their higher end models. There warranty is 3 years on the roller mechanism, 1 year parts and labor, and 1 year in home technician service. The 1 year parts and labor is a bit cheap for a high end chair, but the 1 year in home service is

The DR 6700 comes with 4 automatic massage programs. These are one-touch massage programs. They are based around the following themes: Stiffness, Recovery, Fine and Relax. With the touch of a button, the DR6700 will provide a full body massage for the time set. These programs run the whole chair, so all you have to do is sit back and relax.

Additionally, the Sanyo chair is armed with manual massage techniques. These can be used to target specific symptoms or areas of the body for relief. One of massage techniques for instance is called Grip. The Grip massage treatment uses a gripping action that can soothe and relieve tired and sore muscles. This type of massage is particularly effective for the shoulder and neck areas.

You have a number of options that can be selected with the DR 6700 massage chair. You can adjust the intensity of the massage. This makes it either softer or stronger depending on your desire. Also, the roller width can be changed. This is helpful if you want the spread of the rollers to hit a wider area of your back. Or for example, if you want the rolling massage to hit more of the cervical discs, then you can make it narrower.

There are even more options on the area of your back that you would like to target. Choose from neck and shoulders, lower back, lower body and quick course. You can select the massage technique that you wish and then have it focus in these regions. This is very helpful if you have stiffness in a particular area.

Sanyo is know for its advanced electronics, are any integrated into the DR-6700 massage chair? Yes, there are some very interesting electronics, such as a stiffness detector. The stiffness detector is based on lie detector technology. It monitors your pulse rate and also your perspiration level. It then feeds this data to the computer which then can identify where then tension is residing in your body and adjusts the massage program.

The lower body also needs some attention and the DR6700 has just the answer. An air compressor has been installed underneath the seat which activates air bags in the chair. The air bags provide a soothing compression massage. The air bags are specifically designed for each major muscle group in the legs to provide effective relief.

The DR-6700 massage chair has some very nice features to compliment its massage therapy. The stiffness detector is certainly unique, but actually pretty effective. Good thing it doesn't ask you questions! The manual massage treatments like the Grip massage are fabulous. We do like the automatic programs that Sanyo has developed. We wish the labor for the warranty coverage was a little longer. Overall, this is a solid massage chair that can meet your long term massage therapy needs. - 16035

Is it really important to have a new bathroom vanity?

By Zaina Zidan

Have you ever stopped and wondered why your bathroom vanity is such an important element in your latrine? The biggest reason it has a higher value placed on it compared to all of the other fixtures in the bathroom is because you have total control over it. You choose where to put it and how large or small of one you need. There are just a few small things you might want to look into when you pick out a brand new vanity. The entire theme of your latrine may rest solely on the type of vanity you choose.

Most guests will have a chance to view your bathroom during a visit. The top three pieces that are used in your bathroom are the sink, the tub and the toilet. But your guests can not keep their eyes from wandering towards their image in the mirror in front of them exiting the room. When a mirror is positioned on the wall above the bathroom vanity you need to position it at eye level so that no matter what height your guest is it is accessible to everyone.

When you are a guest in a friend's house, what is it that you notice the most? Whatever you look at the most when you are in their bathroom, you need to make sure that you cover that same detail when you are deigning your bathroom. The centerpiece of the bathroom is the bathroom vanity. The reason for this is because the bathroom vanity is right below the mirror and everyone has to check themselves over while they are washing their hands, and making sure that your appearance is still looking fresh is a big habit for most.

One way to show your visitors that you have a great sense of style is by choosing the right bathroom vanity. The vanity along with its mirror is considered the most important element in any latrine design since every guest uses it before leaving. There are times when your guests are thinking of redecorating their own latrine and they are hunting for decorating ideas. Before making a critical choice you need to embrace the idea of having a particular type of mirror above the vanity and it needs to match your color scheme as well as your theme for decorating.

This is partially due to the fact that this is the one area of the house they notice while they are alone and not preoccupied with conversation. Ironically, they may notice your bathroom vanity more than any other decorative mirror or object in the rest of your life. Therefore, this is the one item that you do not want to skip while redecorating our home no matter what.

Most people match the original size and shape of the current sink and mirror to give a balanced look. You just don't want your new bathroom to look too empty you can consider choosing a larger mirror because of the smaller type of sink. When you are choosing a good-sized vanity mirror you will take up several inches of the bare wall and also your guests will be able to use it easier.

For those with very simple restrooms, or the common fishy theme, you may choose to instead use a bathroom vanity that is either silver or gold, since these two metals will match pretty much any shower curtain or bathroom fixtures you may already have installed. - 16035

Online Marketing for your Business

By Rick Jenkinns

If you have yet to begin marketing your business online, now is the time to start. Among the advantages are lower costs, and the ability find your target audience anywhere in the world. While it is still possible for businesses to do well without the internet, most who decide to give it a try will see positive results. Businesses are now able to target their products toward specific consumers, based on such factors as their age, education, marital status, employment, extracurricular interests and more.

One of the main reasons businesses are looking to the internet for their marketing needs is the affordability factor. The internet is constantly evolving in a direction that makes it more feasible to reach larger numbers of people for less. Websites can be marketed for low costs, or even for free in many cases, via participating in forums related to your type of business, posting links to your website on other websites, or exchanging links with other businesses and organizations.

By utilizing online marketing, businesses are more likely to reach a customer base with interest in what they have to offer. While you are likely to have spent a lot of time and effort researching your target niche, this work will likely not be as worthwhile if you only market your products on television, radio, in newspapers or magazines. Online marketing will increase the odds of finding your target audience by allowing you to search the entire globe for new prospects.

The realization that you can reach customers around the world is mind boggling and you must see the major advantage to marketing your business online now. This makes it possible for you to do business with customers anywhere in the world.

The Internet never sleeps it is up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including all holidays. Does your brick and mortar business do that? Think for a moment if you only advertise locally and you have standard business hours of say 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ? heck let?s make that 9:00 p.m. So your local audience is narrowed down to those who are interested in your product or service, then it is narrowed down more to only those who can make it to your business or reach you during the normal business hours. Just those alone brings the percentage of viable customers down. Now think for a moment about the business that never sleeps, that can be accessed from anywhere at any time. Do you see where I?m going with this? It is non-stop shopping. In this busy world, people are looking more and more for convenience and being able to get online when it is convenient for them, makes them more likely to buy the product or service they are looking for.

If your business is not on the internet already, it should be. You can bet that if your competitors are not already online, they soon will be and they?ll be marketing to your audience too. Don?t get left behind, bring your business up to speed and get your products and services in front of your target audience. Consumers are looking to the internet to meet their shopping needs more and more every day. They are also looking for the convenience of purchasing online, so make sure they are seeing what you offer while they are shopping online. - 16035

Information on Tree Flowering

By James Morris

Dispersal of tree seeds by water, as in the case of certain water plants, occurs less frequently. Of the European trees the older is one whose seeds are dispersed by water as well as by the wind, and of the tropical species the coconut palm is a noteworthy example.

The small seed of the alder is equipped with air sacs that keep it afloat on the water surface for weeks until the spring floods carry it far afield. The coconut palm, now mild on the shores of continents as well as tropical islands, was brought to these places by sea currents and the regular swell of the ocean. But over long distances man also played its part.

To ensure that they fall in a suitable open space and do not merely drop beside the parent tree, where the prospects for their further growth are poor, the seeds are adapted for dissemination to longer or shorter distances. Most are equipped for dispersal by the wind and are either covered with down (willow, poplar) or have membranous wings (birch, elm, pine, spruce) or thick wings (maple, lime, hornbeam). The seeds of another group of woody plants are dispersed by animals, mainly birds. In general these are trees with pulpy, bright coloured fruits which serve as food for the birds, the seeds then being disseminated over a wide area in their excrement (mountain ash, cherry, yew).

A third group is formed by seeds which are themselves food for birds and mammals (oak, beech, walnut) and even though most are eaten, some are way. One would think that seed dispersal by animals is less effect ive than by wind, but the history of tree migration in the wake if retreating ice sheet in the period following the Ice Age gives evidence to the contrary.

Birch and pine, the first pioneers, were followed by the rapid northward spread of the oak and hazel, whose heavy seeds fall only a few metres from the parent Fee. Acorns, however, are a favourite food of jays and pigeons, while hazelnuts are eaten by nutcrackers and woodpeckers and e sometimes carried great distances in their beaks.

Dry fruits with a dry and hard outer wall are Samara - usually a winged, one-seeded fruit with thin, membranous to leathery coat (birch, elm, ash); Nut - a one-seeded fruit with hard, woody wall not connected with the seed (hazel, lime, hornbeam); Legume - usually the product of two carpels splitting along two lines of suture when ripe and containing several seeds; characteristic of most members of the family Leguminosae; Capsule - a single or several valved fruit splitting in various ways when ripe and containing several seeds (poplar, willow, chestnut). Fleshy fruits have soft, fleshy walls; Drupe - usually a one-seeded fruit with a coat comprising three layers: a thin outer layer, middle fleshy layer and a hard bony layer - the stone encasing the seed (cherry, walnut); Berry - a fruit with thin membranous covering and fleshy centre with one or several seeds embedded in the pulpy mass; few trees bear true berries. - 16035

Sycamore and Norway Maple

By Alexa Brooklyn

The sycamore is the most important European species of the genus Acer. It is a tree of western, central and southern Europe, its northward distribution falling short of the Baltic Sea, but it is much planted elsewhere and now naturalized as far north as 'the Shetland Islands and southern Scandinavia.

It generally grows to a height of no more than 7 to 15 metres. Only in riverinc woods or rich soil does it attain a height of more than 15 metres. The bark is furrowed into rhombic plates and the variety suberosa has corky wings on the twigs. The leaf stalk exudes a milky substance when broken off. The yellow-green flowers appear at the beginning of May, together with the leaves. The fruit, a wide double samara with parallel wings, ripens in September and October.

The honey locust is a light-demanding tree and stands up well to cutting-back. It is found in parks, and sometimes in the vicinity of country dwellings, where it is used as a thorny hedge. The wood, which is hard with reddish brown heartwood, is highly prized. The unripe pods are a favourite food of livestock and the dye they yield is used in colouring fabrics.

The Box-elder is a native of North America, where it has a wide range of distribution, extending from California to Florida and northwards to Canada. It was introduced into Europe in 1688, and today is cultivated throughout the entire Continent, tolerating even, the climate of northern Europe. In some areas it is well naturalized and appears wild. It lives to an age of only a hundred years or so and reaches a height of 10 to 20 metres.

It, too, is a large tree of fine proportions, reaching a height of 25 to 30 metres, but it never attains the diameter of the sycamore. It differs from the latter in having longitudinally fissured bark, reddish brown buds pressed close to the twig, and sharply- pointed, lobed leaves. When broken off, the stalk exudes a milky white sap. The bright yellow-green flowers appear in April together with the leaves, and are pollinated by insects. The double samaras have wide-spreading wings.

The Norway maple is shade-tolerant and needs rich, moist soil for good growth. The wood is very like that of the sycamore in appearance and is used for similar purposes, but is not as highly valued. The Norway maple has many ornamental forms, including purple and variegated leaved kinds. It tolerates the smoky atmosphere of cities, and is popularly planted in parks and city streets. - 16035

Trees and Man

By Jesse Johanson

Trees and shrubs are perennial plants whose stems become woody and last for many years. Trees usually have a single erect stem or trunk which at a certain height branches out to form a crown, whereas shrubs branch from near to, or at, ground level.

Trees and shrubs are also differentiated according to height. Small trees attain, a height of about eight metres, those of the second category fifteen to twenty-four metres, and those of the first category more than twenty-five metres. The thickness of a tree is usually given by the diameter of the trunk measured at breast height, i.e. 1.3 metres above ground.

In other words, tree with buds arranged in spirals has the leaves also arranged in spirals. Buds are protected against drying out and frost damage by modified leaves known as scales; either by just single scale (willow or plane tree), two scales (alder), or several scales (beech, hornbeam and oak). Distinguishing features of the scales are colour and pubescence. Some trees that bloom in early spring can be identified by the flower buds, which are of different shapes, e.g. willow, elm, poplar and cherry.

The trunks of most broad-leaved trees divide at a certain height into a few, thick, upward or outward- growing branches which divide further to form the crown which may be broadly oval to round. This shape provides the leaves with the greatest amount of light and air, thus assuring the best conditions for the nourishment of the tree. The tree is anchored in the ground by means of roots which also serve to supply it with water and mineral nutriments.

Spines and thorns are another good means of identification, e.g. on the twigs of the wild pear, black locust and honey locust. The twigs of other trees have conspicuous lenticels (bird-cherry, white ash), waxy warts (birches) or corky plates (hedge maple and smooth-leaved elm).

Vegetation, and, above all, trees are also important from the aesthetic viewpoint - refreshing both to the eye and spirit. How bleak and depressing a landscape without trees would be; and what a beautifying and softening effect wisely-placed greenery has, as it enhances modern buildings and constructions. That trees and forests are a source of profound aesthetic experience and inspirations is testified to by the works of prominent painters, composers as well as the motifs of popular folk songs. Today all civilized nations are making a concentrated effort to protect and increase greenery in cities and countryside. If we are to do a good job of protecting and propagating trees, however, . we must know more about them, learn their life secrets and their requirements. Equipped with the necessary knowledge about trees and shrubs we will be better able to select species suitable for a given environment, and will be rewarded by their good and healthy growth. - 16035

About Leaves

By Jamie Rainbows

Let us now take a look at the structure of the tree trunk. In the centre, there is a narrow column of pith and around it a continuous shaft of wood, called the xylem. This is made up of concentric circles known as the annual rings. Then comes the thin layer of phloem and, on the outside, the bark, which in older trees may be split and furrowed.

This is an adaptation to the environment in which they grow, for they are trees of the north and of the mountains where the climate is harsh and the summer short. To make the best use of this brief period, and not to lose time producing new leaves, they generally retain their foliage throughout the winter.

To be able to bear the weight of the snow and survive frost and lack of water, the leaves have a different shape and structure. Most of their cells are thick- walled and their surface is often protected by a waxy layer.

Most European broad-leaved trees are deciduous, in other words, they shed their leaves in the autumn. Only in southern, and in temperate parts of western Europe do some trees retain their leaves throughout the winter, e.g. the common holly, the laurel and the box. In the autumn the organic substances produced by the leaves are concentrated in the body of the tree and the leaves begin to change colour as a result of the decomposition of the chlorophyll and growing predominance of the red and yellow carotenoid pigments, along with the increase of anthocyanin in the cellular sap.

The width of the annual ring is proportional to the quantity of manufactured food substances, and corresponds roughly to the amount of rainfall and warmth in a given year, i.e. in a favourable year it will be broad, whereas in an unfavourable year it will be narrow. A narrow ring is, therefore, an indication of the unfavourable influence Of dry weather and in trees sensitive to the cold of severe frosts, etc. This correlation today forms the basis of a new study known as dendrochronology.

By examining the rings in trees hundreds and thousands of years old scientists can determine long-lasting changes in the weather and pinpoint alternating periods of dry and wet years in times about which we have no meteorological data. In trees growing in tropical regions where growth is continuous throughout the year the annual rings are hot usually so clearly discernible. - 16035

Bird Cherry and Tulip Tree

By John Anthony

The bird cherry is distributed throughout most of Europe, extending northward as far as central Sweden and eastward to the Yenisei River. It grows mainly in moist situations alongside lakes and ponds and on alluvial deposits; alongside streams, it may be found at elevations over 1000 metres. The bird cherry is a small tree 5 to 15 metres high, with a broad crown and pendent branches.

Today, it is found growing in mixed, broad-leaved woods throughout western, central and eastern Europe, in lowland, hilly and sub-alpine areas up to heights of 700 to 900 metres. It is a robust tree which, under forest competition, attains a height of 20 to 25 metres and develops a tall, straight bole. Grown in the open it forms a short trunk and broad crown. The smooth, red-brown bark becomes shallowly fissured in older trees.

The white mulberry requires partial shade and warm climate, Europe's wine-growing regions providing the best conditions for its growth. It is damaged by frost, but has good powers of regeneration by suckers. It is cultivated in parks as a specimen tree, and is also good in tree avenues, and for planting in hedges.

The tulip tree's name is derived from the shape of the flowers which somewhat resemble those of a tulip. It is a native of North America, where it grows from the Canadian border southward as far as Arkansas and Florida. It is found chiefly in moist forests on rich alluvial soils.

Today, it is widespread throughout western, central, eastern and southern Europe and in some areas is so familiar as to be mistakenly considered a native species. It reaches a height of 20 to 30 metres, the hark is deeply furrowed and the twigs thorny. The ornamental, odd-pinnate leaves appear at the end of May, and, soon after, the white, fragrant flowers, borne in pendent racemes. The false acacia has a wide-spreading root system extending far from the trunk, and nitrogen-fixing bacteria in nodules on the roots; thus it improves the soil, though at the same time it poisons it with its root excretions. The false acacia is marked by the vigorous production of stump suckers, and regeneration by root suckers. It is a fast-growing tree and requires abundant light, but otherwise will grow on poorer and drier soils.

The winged seeds form a cone-like structure and disintegrate in the spring of the following year. The tulip tree is widely cultivated in the parks of western and central Europe for its ornamental flowers, and for its leaves that turn yellow in autumn. The light wood, with yellow-brown heartwood and pale sapwood, is used to make veneers and musical instruments. - 16035

Free vs. Professional Web Hosting Services

By Anand

Web hosting services are really a very critical component of having a very good online traffic. After going through the complicated process of designing a web site, the next step is to look for a very reliable web host that takes your website to new heights. Although free website may appear to be a very tempting offer because of the nil charges for the domain name, the choice between free and paid web hosting service depends on the scale of your business.

If someone wants to have a professional website which can really cater to the demands of its customers, then free website hosting is not the right decision. It is only a viable choice when one is planning to construct a personal website for showing-off to friends, a hobby site or a review forum, basically any kind of a non-profit making site. It is because such websites do not require a lot of services like high file uploading, large bandwidth leading to lower website traffic and disk space. In free of charge web-hosting services, due to restricted ftp, the ability to transfer files is quite limited. Even standard software languages like MySQL and PHP are not used in such sites, unlike those of professional web hosting companies.

Also, gratis web hosting service providers are not very credible as the technical support is not at all reliable. Customer service, although available, varies. Moreover, due to hording a large number of websites on the same server, sometimes the technical support is not available when the server is down. Moreover, in times of high traffic, the ability to handle the site is quite limited. Paid services, on the other hand, provide brilliant 24/7 telephonic or email customer support to guarantee utmost satisfaction to their customers. It is not tough to check the reliability of such web hosting services, as they have testimonials of an umpteen number of contented customers to support them.

A very common problem occurring with the most of the free websites is that they usually suffer from very high downtimes due to sharing of the disk space by a large number of websites. But, this is not the case with paid web hosting services where high uptimes are guaranteed, almost 99.9%, users can claim a compensation if it is not fulfilled.

Another problem that is frequently encountered by the free web host customers is that they are showing a lot of banner advertisements on their sites. This is done to meet the expenses, as the site is free. But, these flashing banners or popup windows can be very infiltrating for the user, since it ruins the style and theme of a site and sometimes might even, scare the customer.

Since no payment is being made for the domain name, problems can arise in the future when you decide to shift to another service provider. You end up losing all your traffic.

Free and paid website hosting services, each have their own pros and cons, but it is up to you, to choose anyone of them, depending upon your resources and the level of expected services. - 16035

Aspen and White Poplar

By Audrey Christopher

Members of Lawson Cypress genus are natives of North America and Asia. Best known in Europe is the Lawson cypress, introduced there from America in 1854. It has a narrow, conical crown and reaches a height of up to 60 metres. It greatly resembles the 'arbor-vitae but differs from them in having pendulous terminal shoots, with reddish- brown, scaly bark, narrow white markings on the underside of twigs, and scale-like needles. The greenish female flowers are borne on the tips of the shoots. The cones, green at first, mature in September when they open to release the small, winged seeds.

It reaches heights of 25 to 30 metres and has a sparse, highly placed crown. The bark is smooth and coloured greenish grey, but old trees have fissured blackish bark at the lower part of the trunk. The buds on the twigs are lustrous-brown and sharply pointed. The aspen is a dioecious species (male and female flowers on separate trees). It flowers in March and the tiny seeds, imbedded in cottonwool-like hairs, are shed in late May. The leaf stalk is long and flattened, and even a slight breeze sets the leaf in motion. The aspen is a light-demanding tree and does not require rich soil.

The balsam poplars are indigenous to North America and Asia. The one most commonly cultivated in Europe is Populus balsamifera L., a native of North America, where it grows on alluvial bottomlands in the northern United States and in Cahada. The name is derived from the pleasant balsam smell of the opening buds and leaves. It grows to a height of 30 metres and has yellow-grey bark, thick and furrowed, and coloured blackish at the base of the trunk.

The twigs are yellow-brown to brown, the buds covered with a layer of balsam resin. The flowers and fruit are very much like those of the white poplar. The balsam poplar is a light-demanding tree that requires considerable moisture.

In Europe it is cultivated mainly in parks for its ornamental, light-coloured bark and pleasant scent in spring. Planted occasionally in hill country is the western balsam poplar (Populus trichocarpa Torr. et Grey), a native of western North America. A northern Chinese poplar (Populus simouii Carr.), a native of China and Manchuria, is more frequently planted as a street and shade tree in European cities.

The white poplar grows in regions with a mild climate. It requires abundant light and ample moisture, and stands up well to flood water and slightly acidic soils. It is very attractive as an open- grown tree in water meadows, and, because of its vast root system, is used also to strengthen sand dunes. In intensive forest management it is being replaced by cultivated forms of black poplars. The wood is soft, and used to make cellulose and for turnery. The pyramidal form from Turkestan, known as Populus alba pyramidalis (syn. bolleana), often makes its appearance in parks. - 16035

Products Tree Provide

By Colin Morissett

As regards growth in diameter the case is somewhat different. In all woody plants it takes place throughout the period of vegetation, from the time the tree comes into leaf until the leaves fall in the autumn, and the extent is influenced by the weather of the current year.

Trees grown for their wood are cultivated in forests. Unlike other raw materials where the supplies are exhausted after a time, if felling is wisely planned, the supply of wood in a forest remains constant and the felled wood is replaced by new wood in the form of new growth.

In the mild climate of central and western Europe, the annual increment per hectare, depending on the site, type of soil and prevailing species, averages from three to ten cubic metres of wood that can be cut without decreasing the supply and production of further wood. With systematic care and fertilization this increment can be increased even further, as is shown by the plantations of cultivated hybrid poplars with an annual increment of fifteen to twenty- live cubic metres of merchantable wood.

The aspen, goat willow, birch and mountain ash may attain 100-150 years. Twice that age, from 200 to 300 years, is reached by the eastern cottonwood, hornbeam, alder, pine and larch; about 500 years by the beech and sycamore; and 700 years by the spruce and fir.

The oldest trees in central and western Europe are the lime, yew and oak, which may live for more than a thousand years. An even greater number. of years is attained in the Mediterranean region by the oriental plane, chestnut and the cedar of Lebanon - as many as two thousand; and on the American continent there are trees that are much older. Up to 2500 annual rings were counted on the stump of a redwood and some giant sequoias are 3500 to 3800 years old.

In the furniture industry, it is mainly the wood of broad-leaved trees such as oak, elm, walnut, ash, beech, cherry arid certain tropical exotics that is used to make the finer, more delicate pieces. In recent decades, only thin layers, called veneers, of these costly woods are being used; they are main structure made of soft wood, thus making the final product not only lighter but also less expensive. - 16035

Adsense fundamentals - how to build revenue with Adsense

By John Austwick

Are you prepare to accept the chalenge and start making money online today? Adsense can assist with that. There are some things you need to know ahead of jumpping right in and choose to follow a career as an Adsense marketer though. Keep these matters in mind when you embark on your own business with Adsense today.

Education is the key

Too many times people interested in making money online throw everything but the kitchen sink into something then relax and HOPE it will work. Hope works all right in some circumstances. I have used it before during tense hockey games. It's not a good consept for building a business. If you want to make revenue by building Adsense as a generator of income then you will need to have a plan as to how that's going to work out for you. More significantly, that plan needs to be realistic and founded on fact rather than Internet hype. There are some people who are making a great deal of money through Adsense. What they do not tell you is that it took them a long time to arrive at that point-not to mention a carefully followed plan of action.

Work Your Plan every day

You will need to hold yourself accountable to your plan and really work at your plan until you've either achieved your goals or decided that your plan isn't working. You can not create a plan, view it but not really do anything for some months, then toss it aside as useless. That is a waste of time, and energy, a sure way NOT to make money with Adsense. You need to work on your plan each and every day. If you don't work on your plan, you need to have a good reason why you are not working on it that day.

Being Realistic

There are not any two marketers who operate in precisely the same way. There could be similarities but everyone has their own individual unique expressive style and presence online. More importantly, they determine things that do and don't work for them as they go. You are able to purchase all the books in the world but in the end the things you are more comfortable doing with Adsense are the things you are going to do. Ascertain from these, which methods work well for you and which don't. Adapt your business plan accordingly and look at outsourcing the things you find less tolerable but that MUST be done.

Adsense income is a beautiful feeling, like pennies dropping from heaven. All the same, it can be a little perplexing while you're going through the learning curve. Keep these fundamentals in mind and your experience as well as your Adsense income will grow as you go. - 16035

Swiss Mountain Pine and Arolla Pine

By Kaylee Savannah

The Austrian pine is a native of the Mediterranean countries, Spain, Calabria, Corsica, Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor. The natural northernmost limit of its distribution was originally Austria, but today the Corsican and Austrian varieties especially are widely cultivated for their rapid growth, and high quality wood, in western and central Europe.

Its leaves greatly resemble those of the Scots pine but are arranged more densely on the twig. The tree form differs from the Scots pine in having grey-black, furrowed bark, which goes all the way up to the crown, and asymmetric cones with knoblike, red-brown scale tips. In the shrub form the cones are symmetrical; broadly opened, with red-brown scale tips.

The Austrian pine thrives in areas with mild winters and hot summers, especially in lime-rich soils. It does not require much moisture and is used to afforest karst territories and to strengthen sanely sea dunes in maritime countries. The wood is resinous and especially well suited for boat building. In some places where there are large forests, use is made of its resin. This tree is a native of the eastern United States and Canada, where it is found mainly in river valleys and moderately swampy sites.

The Arolla pine is a high mountain tree growing in the Alps and Carpathians near the tree line at elevations of 1500 to 2400 metres, in areas with a brief, hot summer. It grows to a height of about 25 metres or more but its knotty trunk and thick ovoid crown reaching almost to the ground are an impressive sight in the harsh alpine environment, where a forest is hard put to keep a foothold.

The Arolla pine has thick, rust coloured, downy shoots and needles clustered densely on the twigs. The cones take two years to mature and when ripe in September they fall to the ground where they disintegrate. The sweet oily seeds are a favourite of birds and rodents. New individuals grow from the seeds they drop on their way, often far from the parent tree. The Arolla pine has a slow rate of growth; not until after its sixtieth year does it begin to flower and bear fruit, but it attains an age of several hundred years. It is adapted to the harsh, mountain climate and stands up well to frost, windstorms and heavy snow. The wood is strong and light, and was formerly used to make furniture and carved objects.

In Europe the jack pine can be recommended only as a short-term pioneer tree in extremely poor and degraded soils, in dry areas, to improve and prepare the soil for more demanding trees. - 16035

What's Needed To Find Real Estate Tips

By Humanlux

As we all know, this subject is something that we could all use a little education on no matter who you are.

Whenever you spend your hard earned money to buy something, you should always have it documented. When you purchase smaller items, such as items at a convenience store, you'll normally be given a receipt. When you purchase greater items, such as televisions and furniture, it will involve a bit more documentation. In exchange for your money, the seller will give you a receipt and in mostly every case a warranty that will protect your investment.

As we think you already know, buying a home involves a lot more paperwork than furniture or even an automobile. Whether you are buying or selling a house, you should always have each step of the process documented. If any revisions are made, they should be recorded as well. You know also that buyers and sellers can prepare the documentation themselves, most choose not to due to the number of revisions that a single document can have. That's why we want to help prevent consumers from these types of headaches; ready-made real estate forms were introduced.

You can get a ready made form from a real estate agent or download the forms right off the Internet through a real estate website. Ready made real estate forms are so easy to use, as they cover virtually all transactions you may encounter - from buying houses to selling them. There are forms that cover just the basics, which are ideal for those with no experience. If you are looking for a more legally binding form, there are also others that cover legal requirements and those that cover disclosure laws as well.

For the rest of this article, we will discuss the meaning behind what we have learned about this subject so far.

You may choose to purchase these forms on an individual basis, as you need them, or buy an entire set instead. Individual forms are very good for anyone who is involved with short-term leases, such as rental property or homes that have been leased out. If you are planning to sell a home or buy a home, you are better of purchasing the entire set of ready-made forms. This way, you'll have the complete documentation you need and you won't have to worry about purchasing more.

Unlike some other types of real estate forms, ready-made forms are assured for their accuracy, legality, and even their contents. Manufacturers of these forms spend a lot of time and a lot of energy verifying their documents, and making sure that they are perfect. Although these forms are normally up to date, you should still check it with your local law and real estate offices to see if there are any updates. Real estate laws and regulations aren't revised that often, and normally tend to stay the same for a very long period.

If you aren't sure about what forms you should need, you always have to ask a real estate agent. Even though ready-made real estate forms are easy to understand and use, there are a few types available. If you want to sell a home, you certainly wouldn't want to use the same form as someone else who wants to buy a home. There are also ready-made rental forms as well, which are perfect for those who are renting out property or leasing.

With ready made real estate forms, the process of real estate transactions are much easier than before. By using these forms, you can do everything yourself - without having to forego realtors. You will save a lot of money as well, just because there is no realtor involved. The next time you think of buying, selling, or leasing out your property, you should look into ready made real estate forms and see just how easy they make real estate transactions.

If you thoroughly examine each part that we have discussed, you will see a common thread of which to explore. - 16035

A New Take On Interior Design: Feng Shui

By James Gilbert Pynn

During the course of the first decade of the 21st Century, it seems a new trend in interior design has emerged. Ironically, that new trend is roughly 3,000 years old. Indeed, it has little to do with Louis XV, Art Deco, or Victorian design themes. Rather, it is a comprehensive system not only for decorating, but also for life. Few interior design specialties would dare make such a boast.

Feng Shui is a Taoist belief system that is based on the optimal arrangement of all the facets that compose a life. Every aspect of life must be arranged and accounted for. From the placement of the front door of one's home, to the placement of shrubs and plants, even down to the color and angle of furniture pieces. When embraced as a system of living, Feng Shui even goes so far as to designate the appropriate grave site. If nothing else, Feng Shui is incredibly thorough.

The practice was not initially concerned with the specifics of interior design. That is, the interior should be secondary to the exterior of the structure. This doesn't necessarily imply the actual exterior components of a building; rather it refers to the positioning. Which direct does the front door face? Does it blend well with the natural vegetation? Is there a ready source of water nearby? All these facets must be taken into consideration when laying the foundations of home.

With the structure in place, its interior can be addressed appropriately. Sources of vegetation, especially bamboo must be placed strategically through the house. Should a door directly face the toilet, bagua (or octagonal) mirrors must be placed above the toilet, effectively "deflecting" evil spirits and ill fortune. Furthermore, a person sitting at a desk should not have their back to the room, and the furniture in a room should not be pushed right up against the walls.

It is crucial to recall how intimately Feng Shui is tied to Taoist theory and the overall Chinese worldview. Understanding these myriad ideas and concepts takes time and dedication. Interior design, as we know it, is changing. Though the traditional themes are still in vogue, the infusion of Chinese sensibilities is sure to add a valuable and popular twist to tradition. - 16035

The Guide to Printing Posters with Adobe Photoshop 4

By David Peters

As a designer, The computer is an Art designer's major tool in enabling us to digitally manipulate images into traditionally looking art images and without effecting the interactive quality. Designing posters certainly has many benefits regarding quality / ease factors with professional software like the Adobe Photoshop 4 version. The main feature on this software that allows such quality results is through its ability to do things like the traditional method with a pencil and paper but amazingly much quicker.

With Adobe Photoshop, you will be able to draw and erase illustrations and images in Photoshop as much as you want. In fact, even in the last stages of the design, you will still be able to edit major parts of the design without beginning from scratch. All these things can be done without even using a single paper or pencil.

From traditional artists to modern commercial graphic designers, you will see that creating marketing materials with Photoshop is relatively easy. From brochures to large posters, you will see that Adobe Photoshop 4 will be able to help you from start to finish. The great thing about Photoshop 4 is that it will be able to help you get things done faster, which means that you will be able to have more time to deal with any minor errors in the design.

Basically, when you are designing a poster in Adobe Photoshop 4, you have to know that there are 4 basic steps to do so.

You then venture into the creating of layers, so proceeding the sketching phase, you convert the image to sepia tones. Then you will start with colors and the halftones created will be more subtle looking and your colors will turn out a lot more natural and sharp looking.

As soon as the sketch has been changed into sepia tones, it is necessary to create two layers. Go to the layers palette and set the background layer to the multiply mode and place it between the two new virgin layers. Check that you put the layers with colors in the lower layer, directly below the sepia layer.

Then you will need to work on the lower layer and for that you must to choose a dominant dark color. which The secondary effects will be able to relate to this and will not lose any of the contrast. Finally you will finish off by working on the higher layer of the drawing, where you can manipulate the lines of the drawing. Edit options include "refine" and "correction" of the lines and you can experiment with lighter colors to smooth out any shapes in the drawing.

The fourth step is to work on the top layer of the drawing. This is where you can work with the lines of the drawing. Here, you will adjust, refine, and correct the lines ad this is where you will also work with lighter colors in order to smoothen out the shapes of the drawing. After coloring your design, you will now need to soften or get rid of the lines that are too heavy on the top layer. - 16035

Get Your Ex Back After You've Wronged Them

By Johnnie S Laney

Do you want to get your ex back after they dumped you for wronging them in some way? Maybe you cheated on them or were too controlling or you fought and argued with them all the time. At some point, they got fed up and dumped you.

Now you've learned a lesson or two. You are sorry for what you've done. You want them back. The good news is that you can recover from the damage you caused the relationship and win them back, if you follow an emotionally powerful proven plan. Plus, you don't need to wait 30 days or longer to get your ex back, you can often repair the damage in hours.

The first thing proven method to getting your ex back after wronging them is to admit to yourself that you did wrong them. You did something or somethings that hurt them. You caused them to go from a heart full of love for you to a heart full of sadness or anger or pain about you. You did that. You cheated on them or you argued and fought with them and they finally had it.

This first step is important because you know how we human beings are. We like to place the blame for bad things outside ourselves. We blame our ex or we blame the drinking or the stress or the loneliness for what we did. We don't want to accept responsibility for our bad behaviors.

The second step is to then admit this to your ex. Dont make excuses, dont try to explain, dont say it didnt mean anything. Talk to your ex and fess up. In your own words say I wronged you. This is one of the most powerful things you can do.

When someone hurts us one of the first things we want to know is if they understand that they hurt us. We dont want to hear excuses and reasons and arguments. We need to know they know what they did wrong. When we understand that, we can start to forgive.

Until we know that our mate understands that cheating was wrong, or being too controlling was wrong, we arent ever going to be sure they wont repeat the bad behavior. And so we cant start to forgive. If you want your ex to forgive make sure one of the first things out of your mouth, before you ever say Im sorry, is to say I wronged you!

So before you get to actually apologizing, you should do certain things first. The above two steps are a good place to start. Acknowledging to yourself and then to your ex what you did wrong is a nice beginning to repairing the damage. - 16035

How To Win Back An Ex

By Jason Donam

It is natural for your friends to give you advice when you have broken up with someone. But is it good advice? Probably not. They only thing good was their intentions.

I know this because I've been through it myself, and I know what kind of advice they gave me. They were well-meaning but if I did it, I knew I had no shot of getting back together with my ex.

You've got to be aware of the kind of emotions that are pouring through you right now. People can see it. They know that you're upset about this. This is not how you want to be when you're trying to get your ex girlfriend back.

Think of all the same mistakes that other guys have made. They go ahead and call their ex even though they are not thinking clearly. What usually happens? They start arguing with them. ARGUING. Now, what do you think the odds are of getting back together when there is arguing involved? It's not impossible, but they sure made it harder on themselves, didn't they?

Fight the natural inclination to confront her. It will not help. Ask your buddies who have been in the same situation and called their ex's voice mail repeatedly how well that worked! You have got to think about this more logically.

If you can sit down and write your ex a letter, then there is an excellent chance of communicating exactly what you want.

OK, you've decided not to be a typical dude and flip out on your ex. You've successfully completed the first step and now you officially have a chance at getting back with her, assuming you don't screw up the rest of the steps. The second step is to tell her you want to be friends. This is critical, you absolutely need to get her to want to talk to you.

Most guys don't react well to being dumped. They go crazy on their ex. And you probably want to as well. Let me clue you in on a little secret: if you want to win her back, you better do the opposite of what most guys do. - 16035

Build Your Own Wind Turbine - It is Easier than You Think!

By Stephen Doyle

With wind powered turbines being the latest in the search for a renewable energy source, it was only a matter of time before homemade wind power kits arrived on scene. These kits allow the average homeowner to supplement their power needs without spending a fortune on a commercially built wind turbine.

In order to purchase a DIY kit, you should check on some basic, necessary elements necessary to installing a wind turbine. Do you have a location that receives enough wind? Does your city or town have codes or permit requirements for wind powered turbines? Do you have space on your land for a 20-30 foot tower?

If you are satisfied with your answers to these questions you are ready to decide on a DIY kit. This decision should be based on your power needs. If you are only going to supplement your power or use it as a backup, a small wind turbine will suffice. If you want to be able to go off the grid you should opt for a larger wind turbine kit. A larger kit will also make enough power that you could feasibly sell excess power back to the power company.

Small DIY wind power kits are great for making wind powered generators. These generators can be used in workshops or to power only certain appliances in the home. Small kits are available that allow even areas with lower winds to capture energy for power use. Larger kits work better with higher winds and for going off the grid.

So you know you can put a DIY wind turbine in your yard and you know the size of turbine you want; now you just need to decide what kind of kit you want. Do you want one that is 'out of the box' ready to assemble and use or are you content with gathering the necessary parts before building your turbine?

For the homeowner who prefers not to have to find all the parts to build a wind turbine, the full kit is an excellent choice. Even though it is more expensive than the technical kit, it still saves an extreme amount of money when compared to buying a commercially built wind turbine. Everything needed arrives with complete instructions ready to be assembled.

The second option is a DIY kit that has instructions, diagrams, and often videos on how to find the necessary parts and then how to put them together to make a wind turbine. These kits are a lot less expensive than complete kits but require more time. Technical kits are very detailed and also offer tips on finding the necessary parts at discounts.

For homeowners who want to do their part in saving our natural resources, DIY wind generator kits are the answer and can cost less than $200. Complete kits or technical instructions, DIY kits save money and supply renewable energy to homes for power use. - 16035

Trees that Have Honey Locusts

By Charlie Reese

Also known as Honeyshuck, Sweet Locust and Sweet Bean tree, the highly adaptable Honey Locust tree is a popular and useful ornamental. It tolerates the poorest of soil conditions, including salt, while also withstanding heat and drought. The honey locust grows quickly, reaching a height of 60 to 100 feet with an average 50 foot width. It roots deeply and is long lived, commonly attaining an age well over a hundred years. It may be transplanted with ease. All of these characteristics make it a valuable windbreak, as well as providing needed shade in a relatively short time.

The honey locust tree, with its stiff thorns, planted and trimmed as a hedge, makes an impenetrable screen against intruders and also serves as an excellent privacy screen. The thorns are so hard, they've been used as nails in times past.

The Honey locust tree is deciduous, with small bright green leaves and sweetly scented cream-colored flowers appearing in late spring. Bees find the nectar appealing, which can help draw bees to your garden. Leaves turn a luminous yellow in fall and compost quickly after falling.

Native Americans found the fruit of the tree, a pod filled with a sweet pulp to be a source of food. The wood of this tree was also a favored material for bows. The pulp inside the pods has been fermented to make a beer, while the seeds may be roasted as a coffee beverage. Native American lore says that the Thunder Spirit's son was known by his ability to comfortably lounge in the branches " and thorns - of the Honey Locust tree.

The wood of the honey locust is tough and durable and makes excellent furniture pieces, although due to its limited supply, you'll not readily find it in lumber yards or furniture shops. Being rot-resistant, it works well for posts and fencing.

With careful management, a stand of honey locust trees can yield a continuous supply of good firewood. Honey locust also provides good fodder to a variety of wildlife as well as domesticated farm animals.

All things considered, the honey locust tree has many virtues besides its use as a windbreak or privacy hedge. This tree is resistant to Gypsy moths. Check with your nursery for its resistance to other pests in your region, as it varies. - 16035

Can blooms be kept in the deep freeze?

By Herbert Sorkin

There is a peculiar form of one-upmanship in being able to pick a nice bunch of flowers in December, and presenting a fresh rose on Christmas morn - and could there be anything nicer? Of course, it will hardly be likely to compare with a bloom from early summer, December weather is all wrong for a start, and most roses have long decided to call it a day, but some varieties just don't know when to stop.

They have somewhat smaller blooms but the group offers a range of colours, and one of them, 'Old Blush China', is also known as the 'Monthly Rose' because of the regularity with which it repeatedly blooms.

Anything from 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) tall, the silvery-pink, sweetly perfumed flowers continue to appear right through autumn into winter. Naturally, this attribute attracted a lot of attention when it was brought to English gardens from China in the latter part of the eighteenth century, and reputedly it is the variety that inspired a famous poet of the time, Thomas Moore, to pen words that have become immortal as 'The Last Rose of Summer'.

The second method, which can be used with a bud that looks likely to open a day or two too early, is to cut the bloom, remove all but the top couple of leaves as before, and as quickly as possible get the cut end and the leaf scars under water in a tall vase to which ice cubes from the fridge have been added.

By all means you may be lucky, but as I say, I have never seen it actually demonstrated. An idea that does work - sometimes - is to immerse an entire, tight, just-beginning-to-open bud and stem, with just a couple of leaves, in a narrow tray or dish of water. It is vital that all air bubbles are removed; they may try to cling around the petals, and it helps to add one drip, no more, of washing-up liquid to dispel these.

A very good variety for our purpose is the modern pure white `Iceberg'. Buds in December sometimes show a slight touch of pink, but the above treatment either clears it or hides it under the opening petals to give a nice white bloom. - 16035

Loganberry

By Rick Stanley

Normally the loganberry is cooked but there are those, like my wife, who like acid fruits, who eat the berries raw with relish, when they are really ripe. The berries are produced in great profusion, being of a deep maroon colour.

The fruits are of a peculiar shape, being brown, round, flattened and with a crown of leaf segments and calyx. No special research has been done on the root stocks but empirical knowledge seems to show that for the half-standard, or standard, the common pear stock is best. Where the tree is to be planted on sandy or dry soil the Crataegus or White Thorn stock is excellent, but where medlars are to be grown in heavy clay soil a quince stock.

Budding is usually done on any of these stocks in July. Feeding the trees. Medlars do quite well when grown in grass, providing this is cut regularly. For the first three or four years a little circle of soil around the tree may be kept hoed or a mulch of sedge peat may be applied on the ground early in June to the depth of an inch for 3 feet all round the tree.

I have not found any special feeding of medlars necessary. Planting the trees. The bush or pyramid trees may be planted as close as 10 feet apart if necessary. The half-standards should be put in 15 feet square and the standards no closer than 20 feet. The actual operation of planting is similar to apples.

It is best to get the planting done early in November but any time in the dormant period will do. Two-year-old bush or pyramids should be planted, but three- or four-year-old standard or half-standard.

Choice varieties for grapes are Brant. It is a very regular cropper and has lovely coloured ornamental foliage in the autumn. The berries are small, black, with a fair non-muscat flavour; Chasselas 1921. A wonderful wall or cloche grape. Is earlier and produces larger berries than the old-fashioned Golden Challeblas. The grapes are golden and of a non-muscat flavour; Chasselas Rose Royale. Excellent for walls and ganwicks. Good cropper. Berries are medium in size, pink in colour and of an excellent non-muscat flavour. Incidentally, they are very ornamental; Excelsor. Another non-muscat flavour but this time a white. A prolific fruiter, berries of very low acidity. Needs warm conditions and then ripens well in the open; Muscat De Saumur. An exceptionally early-cropping golden muscat grape. Berries of medium size but in large bunches; Muscat Hamburgh. Should only be grown against a hot sunny wall or under cloches or ganwicks. A lovely muscat black large berry. Rather delicate; Muscat Queen. Sometimes called Muscat Reine des Vignes. Excellent for walls and under ganwicks or cloches. Does fairly well in the open. A very large berried early white muscat. - 16035

Pleione Orchids

By Beatrice Shepley

Pleiones are charming, miniature orchids with about 16 species in the genus. These are mainly terrestrial, sometimes lithophytic or epiphytic, deciduous plants, which produce rounded or coned pseudobulbs with a single, narrowly oval, ribbed leaf. The flowers are borne singly, but with occasionally two, on a slender stem that arises from the new growth when it is very young.

The flowers are large for the size of the plant, and vary little in their appearance. Typically, the flowers have narrow sepals and petals of equal length, with a large, frilled, trumpet-shaped lip. The colours extend from pristine white to glistening pink and delicate mauve shades. Yellow is a rarer colour, but comes through in a number of the hybrids derived from the yellow-flowered species Pleione forrestii.

Under good culture they make extensive aerial roots, which form a dense and protective mass around the base of the plant. A good number of the species are in cultivation, in addition to a few hybrids, which are generally little improvement upon the fantastic species.

The crossing of these two plants produced the lovely, deep blue V. Rothschildiana, and this one hybrid ha done more to promote the genus in the northern hemisphere than any other orchid. V. Rothschildiana will grow with exceptional ease and bloom two to three times a year. The plants can grow considerably tall, up to 1m (3ft), making an impressive specimen when in bloom The large, rounded blooms are over 7cm (3in) across and will last for several weele at a time. In addition, there are other variously coloured vandas and intergeneric hybrids available.

Stanhopea graveolens These orchids have a definite resting period during which they need to be allowed to dry out. This period may be while they are flowering in the summer, with new growths appearing during the autumn and continuing throughout the winter. Temperature is cool to intermediategrowing.

Pleiones like to be grown very cool, and a frost-free position will suit them during the winter. In summer, while they are growing keep them on a cool windowsill or outdoors, if a suitable place can be found for them, once the flowers have finished. They can be planted out in rockeries in sheltered places, but the biggest danger here is of their being eaten by mice or slugs. Whatever other orchids you grow, find a small place for a few dainty pleiones. - 16035

Tips on Growing Grapes

By Daniel Country

It is generally agreed that vines need an absolute minimum of feeding and they have done well in quite light soil where the roots can get hold of moisture at the right time. In fact, it is generally agreed that it pays to plant vines fairly close because the root competition helps to ensure sufficient starvation.

The methods must inevitably vary, depending on the climate, the method of culture and training, and to a certain extent on the individual varieties. Thus pruning on the shores of the Mediterranean is bound to differ enormously from that done, say, in Devonshire. As my friend Mr. Edward Hyams points out, however, in his book The Vineyards of England, published by Messrs. Faber and Faber, there are certain general rules which must be borne in mind.

Generally speaking, there is no need, as in the case of other fruits, to add a fish manure or hoof and horn to help rot down the straw. If these organic fertilizers are not provided, the straw that is pulled down into the soil by the worms will be rotted down by the bacteria who will, to do this, withdraw some of the existing nitrogen already in the soil. This, therefore, has the right effect in reducing the exuberance of rampant grapevines.

Meanwhile a strong growth will be developing froth the base of the vine rod that was cut back hard in January. This should be allowed to grow upright and should be tied to the stake or wires. Any side growths that develop will be pruned back to one leaf, and if any flower trusses are seen, these will be pinched up.

The following January the cane that has borne the fruit in the summer will be pruned, back to within an inch of its base, while the other cane that was trained upwards will be curved round to take the place of the one which was cut back. Thus year after year you ensure replacement of strong young wood, plus heavy cropping.

In France, where, large acreage is planted, they cut off all the roots to within a couple of inches of their base and then they plant with a steel-pointed dibber about 9 inches deep. The planter then stamps the soil to make certain that it is really firm. The vines should be planted in late October while the soil is still warm and friable. The vines should be planted when they are one year old. - 16035
