What To Do If Your Building Project Is Causing A Lot Of Dust

By Edward Jonstone

If you are working on, or managing a building project that is leading to a lot of dust in the air and thus disturbing people around the site, then you need to take some actions to help prevent this. Dust can bring up allergies in many people, and you could potentially be harming someone's health. But fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to stop this from continuing.

To start with, you can consider putting a plastic tarp over the building and weighing it down. This will prevent dust from rising in the air and spreading around. Of course, this is not possible for very large buildings, but if you are on a site that is considerably smaller and can afford being wrapped up then this surely is a great method for reducing the amount of dust.

Usually, the amount of dust in the air is directly related to the amount of exposed soil on the site and the disturbance on this soil. To avoid a lot of dust from rising up, instruct your crews from moving all over the uncovered soil, and furthermore demarcate areas where vehicles and people are allowed to move.

In addition, you can spray water on the earth and dampen it. In this way the dust will settle and stay settled for as long as the earth stays damp. You will almost certainly have to repeat the sprinkling process every other day depending on the weather, but this is an inexpensive method of fixing the problem. Putting too much water in the earth will however turn it to mud which could potentially lead to problems such as stuck vehicles.

If you have not initiated the project yet, you can have plants or grass planted on the top soil that will not be disturbed. This would be all the bare soil outside of the demarcated area. Once there is flora on this the top soil will settle, and the wind speeds will also decrease at ground level thus reducing the amount of soil going into the air.

You can also mulch the top soil to reduce the amount getting in the air. An additional choice is tilling the top soil so that larger and moister clods are on the surface and they will then hold the top soil in place. You can also make use of stones for a similar reason and spread these as cover where there is bare soil. One more choice is creating wind barriers that will slow down or stop the wind, and consequently make it tougher for the top soil to get in the air. Tarps, vegetation, or constructed fences can be efficient in slowing the wind.

Naturally, you will have to use a variety of these ideas to bring down the amount of dust, as no one method will entirely fix the problem. You will be required to inspect the building area and figure out the best ideas for individual sites so as to make sure that you are employing the accurate methods to reduce the problem.

Dust is widespread in building sites, and it is your job as a planner to contain the harm it does to the nearby land. Earlier planning can aid you in stopping this problem from becoming a large issue. - 16035
