Rediscovering the Fun in Craft Shows

By Rita Horowitz

Just a few months ago, I never thought I'd be one who liked going to fairs. I never quite had the will power to go on those rides they always have, but watching from a distance is always enjoyable. I liked the fun and lively atmosphere these events always have and even though I go home tired afterwards, I have a feeling of satisfaction whenever I get home from a day at the fair.

It wasn't always like this at fairs, though. Not with me, at the very least. It was because of an unfortunate experience with a puppy-love first date during my teen years that my first ever boyfriend broke up with me at a fair. I'll spare you the details, but needless to say, I was publicly humiliated.

So, you can't really blame me for having sworn of all fairs.

Then, just a few months back, one of my friends from college needed some moral support. She was setting up a booth at a fair, and wanted someone to be there with her. Right then and there, I decided to be an adult and face my fear. After all, how can I be dumped if I don't have a boyfriend at the moment?

So, I made up my mind to try going to a fair after that last, mortifying time. And now I've discovered, I love fairs! So many interesting sights to see, and so many fun things to buy. But ultimately, what really got my attention was a something I've been missing for a while now: My youth.

Seeing my friend do her crafts reminded me of my own desire to do the same thing. I had a passion for woodcarving that I inherited from my grandfather; and this allowed me to get into my artistic side again. These days, you can find me selling some of my crafts at various fairs. - 16035
